'American Idol' Castoff Burnell Taylor Says 'My Job Here Is Done'

From his first audition, Burnell Taylor was touted as the very best of the guys battling it out on "American Idol," and, during his time on the show, he made it very clear that 2013 would be "a boy's year ... again."

But, after Thursday night's shocking elimination, Taylor wasn't even the last man standing (improbably, that, uh, honor goes to Lazaro Arbos). And while fans will debate whether or not he should have been sent home — and despite the cocky streak he displayed during his time on "Idol" — when MTV News spoke with Taylor backstage, he was gracious in defeat. Rather bizarrely so.

"I'm just so excited because I feel like my job here is done, I did what I was supposed to do, I inspired people hopefully, and you know, I'm ready to take on life after this," he said. "I knew I was going home. I had a feeling the whole week ... it was just recognizing the truth. Anybody that's left ... I'm happy for them, because I know where we started from. I mean, we started in July and June, it's about to be July and June again. That's a long ride, so I'm proud of everybody, and whoever wins, I'm just happy that I'm going to know the winner."

Taylor also said he had no regrets about his performance of Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" — "Rock obviously isn't my forte, but I took it for what it was, and I just let go and had fun," he said — and he even backtracked on his earlier prediction that a guy would once again win "Idol." After all, at this point, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that a girl will take the title for the first time in six years.

"I mean, it's pretty obvious a girl is going to win; we were just trying to hang in there!" Taylor laughed. I'm proud of the girls; I feel like it's way overdue. And the fact that it's a possibility a girl will win, I'm just happy for all of them. I love them."

Of course, there seems to be one girl Taylor loves just a little bit more: Amber Holcomb, whom he made sure to kiss after he was eliminated. So, is there a potential relationship brewing, or is this just a crush?

"Well, one, a crush only involves one person, so let's just start there; it's not a crush," Taylor smiled. "Yes, I gave her a kiss, but I showed everybody love, because I just wanted them to know that I genuinely loved them."
